A Garry’s Mod server is an online machine that hosts a multiplayer session of Facepunch’s sandbox game. It runs a specific gamemode, loads addons and brings players together around shared rules, maps and objectives, all reachable directly from the game’s built-in server browser.
Launch Garry’s Mod, open the multiplayer tab to browse the server list, then filter by gamemode or ping. Double-click a server to connect. You can also open the console and type the connect command followed by the server’s IP address and port.
The most played modes are DarkRP, an urban roleplay experience, Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT), built on deduction and betrayal, Prop Hunt, a hide-and-seek where you disguise as props, and Sandbox, the free building mode. Each server tailors these gamemodes to its own community.
Yes, Garry’s Mod is a paid game bought once on Steam ; there is no official free version. Once installed, you can join every public server at no extra cost. Owning Counter-Strike: Source improves the textures on some maps, but it is not required.
Download the SteamCMD tool, install the Garry’s Mod dedicated server (App ID 4020), then edit the server.cfg file to set the gamemode, map and player count. Open port 27015, start the server and add your addons through a Steam Workshop collection.
