A dedicated Space Engineers server is a machine that hosts a persistent world continuously, independently of connected players. It runs the simulation (physics, blocks, ships) and lets several engineers build, mine and explore together on the same map, even when no one is present.

Space Engineers 2 has been available in early access (alpha) since January 2025, but it does not offer multiplayer yet: the co-op mode is targeted for late 2026. Dedicated servers and the multiplayer scene therefore remain on the first Space Engineers, which keeps an active community and well-populated servers.

To join a server, launch Space Engineers, open the multiplayer menu then the dedicated servers tab. Search for the server's name or paste its IP address into the favourites. Select it and click "Join". The world and required mods download automatically before connecting.

Survival mode requires managing resources, energy, oxygen and step-by-step crafting: it is the most demanding. Creative mode offers unlimited blocks to build freely. Servers often offer cooperative PvE or PvP, where factions fight for territory and loot.

Yes, Space Engineers is a paid game that you must buy, mainly on Steam, to play online. Once you own the game, access to community servers is free: no subscription is required. Some additional content is sold separately, but it is not essential to join most servers.
