Mojang used Minecraft Live on Saturday, September 26, 2026 to unveil the content of the next drop: the Ice Caves, an underground biome made entirely of ice. For players, it's a new area to explore. For those who run Minecraft servers, it's above all a new biome, a new mob and a new status effect to plan for in the coming months.
We went through the official announcement and the first available details to sort out what's confirmed from what's still unclear.
What was announced on September 26
The Ice Caves are a new cave biome coming with Minecraft's next drop, according to the official Minecraft Live recap published by Mojang. Inside, you'll find ice, calcite, icicles growing from the ceiling, and ice crystals that form on the ground and give off a soft glow.
The biome also has its own resident: a frozen zombie variant. It deals regular damage and also applies a freezing effect to any player it hits. Some of these zombies throw ice balls from a distance.
According to the Minecraft Wiki, the biome generates underneath snowy biomes, such as snowy plains and snowy taigas. Icicles can fall and hurt any mobs standing below them.
The same Live confirmed that The Sift, a new dimension, is coming to Java and Bedrock in 2027. We've already published our analysis of The Sift dimension, so here we're focusing on the Ice Caves, which will arrive much sooner.
When is the drop coming?
No precise date for now. Mojang simply refers to the next drop, and the community wiki lists it as the fourth drop of 2026, tied to Java version 26.4. The first snapshot of that version, Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 1, came out on September 22, before the Live, and doesn't include the biome yet.
Mojang's usual pace therefore leaves a few weeks of snapshots before the stable release. That's enough time to see it coming, as long as you keep up with the release notes.
What it changes for a server owner
World generation first. As with previous underground biomes, expect the Ice Caves to only appear in chunks generated after the update. If you pre-generated your map with a tool like Chunky, the areas already created under your snowy biomes will stay without it. On Minecraft survival servers, this is often the right time to expand the world border, or even to prepare a new map if a reset was already in the works.
Plugins next. A new mob, a new status effect and falling blocks are all cases your plugins don't know about yet. Think of plugins that handle mob spawning, region protections that control damage, and PvP arenas that filter effects. Paper, Spigot and Purpur keep up with every version, but third-party plugins often lag behind.
PvP and balancing. Ice balls that apply a freezing effect are a new tool for players if the item can be picked up and thrown. On a factions or PvP server, we recommend testing this point first as soon as a snapshot includes it.
Crossplay, finally. Drops normally release at the same time on Java and Bedrock. If your Java server welcomes Bedrock players through Geyser, compatibility with the new version will decide when you can update. Bedrock communities running on a native server will have to wait for their server software to be updated.
Should you do anything now?
No, nothing urgent. The biome isn't even playable in a snapshot yet. Our advice: put it on your end-of-year schedule, keep a test server handy, and let your community know that the update won't be instant on release day. Players are perfectly fine waiting a few days when you explain why.
And for players?
For you players, the Ice Caves promise slightly more tense exploration. Zombies that freeze you, spikes falling from the ceiling when light gets involved, and crystals that light the way without a torch: enough to change your mining habits. Since the biome sits under the snow, servers with plenty of snowy biomes near spawn will be the first to enjoy it.
