Minecraft: The Sift, what it means for your server

Avatar Metrakit - 09/26/2026 at 22h04

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, during Minecraft Live, Mojang announced The Sift, a brand-new dimension coming to Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027. It's the first new dimension in over fourteen years, and the fourth in the game after the Overworld, the Nether and the End. At Top-Games, our first thought went to admins: what does this change for Minecraft servers, and should you start preparing now? Short answer: not yet. Here's why, and what we're keeping an eye on.

What Mojang and Microsoft have confirmed

We're sticking to official sources here: the Minecraft Live recap on minecraft.net and the announcement published on Xbox Wire the same day. Here's what we know for sure:

  • The dimension is called The Sift.
  • It joins the Overworld, the Nether and the End as the fourth dimension in the base game.
  • Mojang presents it as the first dimension added in over fourteen years. For context, the End arrived with version 1.0 in late 2011.
  • It shows up first in Minecraft Dungeons II, which releases on September 29, 2026.
  • It will then come to Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition "next year", meaning 2027.

As for the atmosphere, Mojang describes a place that is "beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls", with areas like the Meadow and the Carapace in Dungeons II. Nothing says yet that these areas will carry over as-is to the main game.

What we don't know yet

Almost everything that matters to a server admin is still unknown. We'd rather say so clearly than speculate:

  • No exact date in 2027, and no version number.
  • No details on how you get there in Minecraft: portal, item, structure, we don't know.
  • No vanilla blocks, mobs or mechanics detailed for Java and Bedrock.
  • No information on world generation, or on how existing worlds will behave.
  • No schedule for Java snapshots or Bedrock previews featuring this dimension.

Everything below is therefore based on experience with previous updates, not on Mojang announcements. We'll flag it every time.

More terrain to generate means more disk and CPU

An extra dimension means extra playable space for your players to explore, and every chunk they visit ends up on disk. On Paper, Spigot or Purpur servers, the Nether and the End already live in their own world folders (world_nether, world_the_end). If The Sift follows the same logic, your backups will grow and chunk generation will weigh on the CPU during the first few weeks, when everyone wants to visit it at once.

If you pre-generate your worlds with a tool like Chunky, plan to add this dimension to your routine when the time comes. But the exact size, terrain type and generation cost will depend on choices Mojang hasn't detailed yet.

Existing worlds: reset or not?

It's the question everyone is going to ask, and there's no official answer. What we can tell you is how it has worked so far: the Nether and the End are only generated when a player enters them for the first time. If The Sift works the same way, an existing world could host it without resetting the Overworld.

Access is the open question. If the entrance relies on a structure or block that only spawns in new chunks, heavily explored old worlds may need to push back their border to find one. We've seen that scenario with plenty of biome and structure additions. We're treating it as an open question until the first snapshots land.

Plugins, forks and mods: the real delay

For a server, Mojang's release date is never the real date. You then have to wait for PaperMC, Spigot and Purpur to ship a compatible build, and for your plugins to follow. The ones that deal with worlds are the most exposed: multi-world management (Multiverse-Core, for example), region protection, anticheat, world borders, dimension-based economies. Many of them check the dimension name or type, and a fourth type could catch them off guard.

Same story on the modded side: loaders like Fabric and NeoForge will need updating, then every single mod. Heavy modpacks are often the last to migrate, and modded Java servers usually stay on the previous version for several months. A mod that already adds its own dimensions could also conflict with the new one, though again there's no way to check that today.

What about Bedrock?

The announcement covers Java and Bedrock at the same time, which is good news for crossplay communities. Admins listed in our Bedrock server rankings will need to watch for the Bedrock Dedicated Server update, or for their alternative server software. Those who let Bedrock players join a Java server through Geyser will also depend on its update. Mojang hasn't said whether both editions will get The Sift on the same day.

Why nothing is urgent today

There's nothing to install, nothing to configure, nothing to test: no snapshot is available for The Sift, and the release is only announced for 2027 with no further detail. Changing your infrastructure now would mean preparing for an update whose content nobody knows.

What we do recommend is keeping some headroom. If you're renewing a hosting plan this year, avoid sizing your storage too tightly. Make a note of which critical plugins depend on a single or barely active developer, since those are the ones that hold back version upgrades. And if you're launching a new server, keep in mind that the 2027 update will be a great opportunity for a relaunch event built around the new dimension.

For players

If you can't wait, the only way to see The Sift before 2027 is Minecraft Dungeons II on September 29. Otherwise, your usual server won't change anything until next year. Servers focused on exploration and survival should be among the first to open the dimension once it's ready, so keep an eye on the latest Minecraft servers added around release time.

What we're following closely

We'll be back on The Sift as soon as Mojang releases the first Java snapshots or Bedrock previews, with what they reveal about generation, access and compatibility. Running a server and have a specific question about this dimension? Let us know in the comments or get in touch, and we'll include your questions in our coverage.
